The layout, the neighborhood, getting around, and more…

The Layout:

The bedrooms are in a spacious 1200+ sq. ft. house that we call “The Gillespie House.” The house features large shared spaces like a full kitchen, spacious living room, dining room and patio area with a view.

Your Private Area:

Your room has a brand-new spring-coil king-sized bed, bedding, nightstands, antique desk, chair, and two small cabinets to store your stuff. It has an alarm clock with a USB jacks to charge your Smartphone.

Each bedroom (and the living room) has a 32-inch Apple TV where you can watch unlimited free movies and TV shows, on demand, from Netflix, Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO, YouTube, Disney, WSJ, Bloomberg, ESPN, PBS, MLS, MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, the Tennis Channel, The Weather Channel and PBS Kids. In addition to all this free content, you are also entitled to a paid movie rental from Apple’s iTunes Store on us. (1 per stay).

* The Lavender room is the largest of the 3 bedrooms for guests in the house. It is the master bedroom and has its own attached private bathroom. The private bathroom is new, clean, fully stocked, has a Jacuzzi bathtub, and even the towels are lavender.
* The White and Turquoise Rooms share a bathroom

Look at the room page for the private amenities you have.

The Shared Areas

The shared kitchen is large and features a refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, 4-burner stove, full-sized oven, toaster-oven, toaster, coffee maker, coffee bean grinder, cutlery, pans, pots, wine opener, can opener, salt/pepper, paper towels, etc. The island in the middle even has USB jacks to charge your phone. The full-sized refrigerator comes pre-stocked with bottled water and fresh Starbucks coffee beans.

While this is a shared house, there’s ample room for privacy, since the house is so big and every guest has their own schedule. We carefully choose our guests and a phone interview is mandatory to ensure that every guest is respectful and will be a good fit. This is more of a temporary community of friends. Most people that stay here use the house as a temporary residence while they look for permanent housing in San Diego.

What guests can access

Each suite is equipped with everything you could possibly need. In addition to this, you have full access to the full kitchen, living room with a 32-inch TV, dining area, and back patio. Each guest has assigned space in the refrigerator, both a shelf and door section, as well as cabinet space for dry goods. The kitchen is stocked with condiments and basic cooking essentials. You will find everything needed for an afternoon in the sun or a BBQ in the back in the large patio equipped with a propane BBQ, sun umbrella, and beautiful outdoor furniture. The laundry room is always stocked with laundry detergent, dryer sheets, and an ironing board.

Your interaction with guests

Our family is approachable, extremely friendly, and enjoys interacting with our guests. We are just a text message or call away if you ever need anything at all.

About the neighborhood

The house sits on a 1-acre property on top of a hill with panoramic views of local mountains and all of East San Diego County. The patio and dining room overlook the flight path to Gillespie field, where you can see restored WWI and WWII aircraft constantly flying by.
The neighborhood is a quiet, predominantly single-family residential area. It is so safe that I often don’t lock my car at night. Our family has lived here 30 years without a single theft or incident.
It is located in the city of El Cajon, which is in San Diego’s East County.
This location is generally sunnier than the coast, but still has easy access to beaches, mountains & desert.

If you are a pilot or aircraft buff, Gillespie field is a 30-minute walk, or a 6-minute drive away.

How to get around

It is just 30 minutes away from the beaches at La Jolla Cove, La Jolla Shores, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, and Mission Bay.
Less than 6 minutes away are the shopping malls and restaurants in Santee and fun places for the family like the Santee drive-in and Parkway Bowl. Food options include Mexican as well as lots of different ethnic foods from Japanese to Lebanese.

There are several grocery stores within a short drive including specialties like Middle Eastern, Mexican and health food.

Driving: Easy access to everywhere from I-8 or I-52 (both are 4 minutes away). You are allotted one parking space with plenty of street parking.

Transit: There is a bus stop within 10 minutes’ walk. An 8-minute bus ride will take you to the El Cajon or Santee trolley stations with access to most of San Diego’s attractions. Keep in mind that San Diego’s public transportation system is nowhere near as robust as that of New York or San Francisco. You are far better off renting a car at the local Enterprise car rental place for approx. $25/day.

It sucks to be alone for the holidays when you are in a new city without family. All guests from all of our 4 units are always invited to our place for Thanksgiving (and other get togethers).
View from the patio at sunset. We are on a hill, so you can easily see the all the local mountains. Seen here are Mt. San Miguel, Mt. Helix, and Cowles Mt. (an popular hiking destination - only 15 minutes away). Cowles Mt. is the highest peak in the city. From its summit, you can see all of San Diego.

WOW! The house sits atop a hill overlooking El Cajon and Gillespie Field; the views were amazing during the day, the sunsets unbelievable, and at night it was great to look out over all the twinkling lights… like being up in the mountains, but with all the conveniences you’d expect. Read more…
